There are so many times I wish I could speak just one more time to the people I love who are now gone. And, I wanted to get these family notes down so they would be here for the ones after me if they want to know more about the people whose genes helped make them who they are. Thank you to Karen, because without this computer, these charts and notes would never have been done, and these pieces of modern day technology would have been in Bear Creek long before now.

While I have the information in front of me - the picture of Anne, Jimmy, Scott and Sean sitting on Grandma Cile's porch. When this picture was taken, Anne, Jimmy & Family were living at 2011 Forest Heights Drive. This is off of Forest Park Avenue and Windsor Mill Road.

How can you write about yourself in one of these things. Maybe it would be best to have the people receiving these notes write in their own comments. I will say my favorite things to do are: dancing, golf, cooking and gardening. Having fun with family and friends is also very important.

I sent a revised copy of the "tree" to Ernestine, including her family's pictures. I received this note in reply today. I also sent her a "book" that you can print out on any individual which included our pictures and notes about Grandpap. One of the "facts" about Grandpap was when Raymond mentioned he remembered him sitting in his chair in the corner of the house (farm?) where he kept his tobacco and smoked his pipe. It also included the stories you remembered, Bob with him disappearing and the possibility of Queen Victoria calling on his Mother. (Too many "included"s here!) Can't change it -- it keeps erasing what I've already typed. You'll have to deal with it - sorry.

So - see -- they do remember "stuff" that they don't realize is interesting. The "Aunt Jo" she mentioned must be Aunt Teet's old maid sister,

"Josie" that she indicated Aunt Teet didn't get along with. I wonder what else she remembers about her?

I think Ben Bates and I will be going to Annapolis to the Hall of Records to see what I can "dig up" - pardon the pun.

in the two month period from when Nan was born to the time Maggie passed away. Also will look for the passenger list there even though I've asked for a copy from the Church of LDS.

Later guys -- nice weather here for the coming two weeks. Was able to walk around with no coat again today. Took all the Christmas things down. The day after New Year's all that stuff just looks like so much clutter to me. Boy - what a job! Have to store it in my "attic" -- which is my old roof. It's accessible by crawling through all my clothes and stepping through a little trap door. Can only stand up all crouched over -- or crawling on your knees. Very pleasant, especially when I found that a mouse had been in stuff. BAH - HUMBUG! Boy - wish I had my nice dry basement from 1930 Greengage Road in this house!!!!!!

Having Chinese tonight -- cannot stand the thought of one more bite of turkey, ham, pork, etc. etc. -- OR anything that could be served with sauerkraut!!!!

HA! Would love to crawl into a nice big pile of Steamed Crabs with the Old Bay dripping into my beer. But, will have to settle for some

spicy Szechuan something or other.

Didn't find all that much today -- took a while to get the "hang" of things -- so when I go there again, I can just start right in.

I spent a lot of time combing the birth certificates for the three months between the time when Nan was 9 months old until Maggie died to try to find "the baby". After hours of searching -- I came up with nothing. If she had that baby at home with no mid wife, etc. and if she got sick right away, the baby's birth may never have been recorded. Unless a miracle happens -- I don't think I'm ever going to find out any more than what we already know.

Here's what I did find out:

1. Percival Peters death certificate (Edward Keen Peters' brother) never married. I remember Raymond said everybody, including Nan, really liked him. Edward Peters is the one who gave the info for his death certificate and he listed his father as "C. G. Peters". I don't know where the "C" is coming from. He died of a word I'm having trouble making out "Aparoea" with the secondary cause of death being nephritis (yeah, I know, kidneys).

2. I found John "Grandpap" Burnett's death certificate. Lillian Walther (Aunt Teet's daughter) gave the information. (Although they didn't have the year right in any of the censuses where they were the ones giving the information, etc.) -- so I don't trust a whole lot here. It does list John's father as John Burnett as well. John's Mother's maiden name says "unknown" (CRAP !!!!!) The cause of death is Chr. Myocarditis (yeah, I know - heart) and secondary Senile dementia. Are we sure the part about him being hit by the car is correct? Unless - like Ernestine mentioned, they were afraid he was going to burn the house down -- maybe he wandered out thinking he WAS going to go to Pimlico and got hit. There's a theory. It does say that the doctor tended him from January 20, 1938 - February 1, 1938. Doctor said he last saw him alive on January 26th. So there is time for Nan to have taken him the -- BOB -- WHAT DID YOU SAY SHE TOOK HIM ?

3. Milicent Lane Peters death certificate. Address 1547 Lynnbrook Avenue (this is another address on Lynnbrook Avenue -- and Edward Keen Peters was living there as well when she died on February 20, 1915.) I'll have to see which one he lived in first by comparing these dates with the census figures -- 2207 or 1547 Lynnbrook.

Guess we'll have to take another car ride!!!

4. Naturalization Papers for Wilson Burnett (son of Grandpap)

I found the Naturalization Papers for Wilson Burnett. The official date of his naturalization was -- and I quote -- "State of Maryland - City of Baltimore, to wit - At a sitting of the City Court of Baltimore in the 8 Judicial Circuit of the State of Maryland, begun and held at the Court House in the City of Baltimore, in and for the City aforesaid on the 2 Monday of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and Eighty Seven . . . Wilson Burnett a native of Scotland . . . that the said, Wilson Burnett resided in the United States three years next preceding his arriving at the age of twenty-one years, that he has resided five years within the U.S., including the three years of his minority; and that he was resident one year end upwards immediately preceding this application, within the State of MD; that during the said term of five years, he has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the . . . blah, blah, blah, blah. . . (another CRAP -- no county, etc. listed) -- NOT BEING GOOD (OR INTERESTED) IN MATH -- DOES ANYONE FEEL LIKE FIGURING OUT WHAT YEAR THIS MEANS HE CAME OVER? The census that lists his name says 1971 -- same as Grandpap and Aunt Teet and the other Burnett I found. Now that I'm thinking about it -- you'd have to know what year he turned 21. So - forget it!

There were no cards where John or Margaret Hay Burnett were naturalized -- or any other Burnett. I think they fibbed on the census. Although, Ben mentioned the fact that " . . . how did he get a City job as shepherd without being a naturalized citizen?"

I wanted the birth certificates for Thomas and Charles Keen but they were born in 1862 and 1834. The birth records only go back to 1875 (ANOTHER CRAP!!!!)

So many other things I didn't get a chance to look up!

That's it -- no page after page of "stuff" --

I'll have to do the Civil War research on my next visit --

Believe it or not -- the Enoch Pratt Library had more modern machines to look up the stuff. Here you have to search the films on one machine -- then take it to one that prints -- find it all over again -- pain in the buttuski

Dear Ernestine - Sorry about the typewriting -- but I type so much faster than I write.

I wanted to send you a special thank you for the information you've given me. It's allowed me to fill in one more missing Burnett child. And, also gave me some details about her so she has a "personality". Shame she couldn't have left us with a "prettier" picture. But, it certainly adds interest rather than just having a name and date. I only have pictures of Aunt Teet and Maggie. Wouldn't it be wonderful if I could find pictures of some of John and Margaret Burnett's other children?

I'm including one of the censuses so you can see how I've gotten a lot of information. Problem is - if you don't have the names to start with - it's practically impossible to find the people you're looking for without help from relatives such as yourself. The only other two still with us are Raymond Boulay (the child of Bell's sister, Josie - there's that name again. And, Mother's Aunt Lillian (the child from the second marriage of Edward Peters after my Grandmother Belle's mother died.) Raymond's memory is just about completely gone and Aunt Lillian has decided she's lived long enough and doesn't want to think about the future or the past anymore. My Uncle Earl helped me a lot before he died and Mother doesn't remember many details.

I also wanted to explain the main reason I've gotten involved in this. I wanted to do something as a memorial to my dear Grandmother (before I got too old myself) that will leave a record of her family. We knew a lot about the Anstines -- but very little about the Burnetts and Peters before I started this Family Tree.

My Grandmother was such a wonderful person. I don't think anyone ever had anything unkind to say about her. Our family basically fell apart after she passed away. What a shame, especially knowing how close everyone was while she was here. I was just a little kid myself - so it was out of my hands. My Grandfather grieved himself to death and my Mother hasn't gotten over it to this day.

This is my way to "bring them back together" for future generations. I always think since some of them lived for so long, how nice it would have been if she could have been with us until she was a hundred and something.

I think I've found another chid -- Joseph A. Burnett. I'm 99% sure this is also John And Margaret Burnett's child. I've included the census sheet on them.

They lived on Limond Place right near the farm where my Grandmother was born. All the children seemed to settle within a few miles of each other and close to Grandpap. As you know, he seemed to stay around Druid Hill Park in his "younger" years where he worked. The stupid census taker wrote right over the place wehre it lists his occupation! But, you can see that it does list the year he came from Scotland. The same year they all came here.

Do you remember anybody ever talking about this JOSEPH Burnett?

And, one other thing -- you mentioned that Aunt Teet also raised Wilson's children. Do you know the reason for that? Would be interested.

Hunter Knight Anstine has always been a great person. His personality always lights up any place where he's present. He and Lisa are just starting their family at this writing -- so we will have to add a page or two when the "New Anstine" gets here.

Hunter was in the Coast Guard for a few years. He has been one of the fortunate Anstines to have traveled and lived in many different places from England with his parents to Tampa, Florida where he met Lisa and resides at this time making a name for himself in the business world.

"MAMA LISA'S COLD PASTA"

Elliott and Abigail Anstine were both born in Tampa but their family traditions came from much further north. Their mother, Lisa was born in Harvard, Massachusetts, near Boston. Boston is a wonderful city with a long cultural heritage.

One of the wonderful things about Boston is the fact that the area has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. In 1620 when the Pilgrims from England landed at Plymouth Rock, they founded Plymouth Colony. The Native Americans who already lived in the area befriended them and after a very difficult winter they joined with them in what would be the first Thanksgiving Celebration.

After the Revolution the colony and surrounding areas became the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Boston was the focus of the new state but other surrounding areas began to attract new residents. In the fishing camps along the coast a great tradition of Portuguese grew up. Boston became famous for Baked Beans and Fish Cakes. New England style Clam Chowder which uses a cream base became a standby.

Around the end of the 19th century there was a great migration to the Boston area by people from Ireland and Italy. Irish dishes such as Colcannon and stew made from lamb became a welcomed addition to the Boston cuisine.

With the Italians came pasta. Today we normally eat pasta as a main dish but most Italian families choose to eat it as a side dish. Pasta originally came from China and many believe that it was brought to Europe by Marco Polo.

In Italian families hot pasta dishes cooked for hours are a favorite for Sunday dinner. Recipes are closely guarded and passed down from generation to generation. Each family has a little twist that makes their recipe for "Gravy and Macaroni" unique to them.

This is what happened with Lisa's Family Pasta Recipe. The secret to the recipe and the thing that makes it unique in the realm of Sunday dinners is that, while the pasta is served hot and steaming, the sauce is served cold. This makes for a zippy unusual flavor that kids really like.

When Elliott and Abigail's Mom attempted to trace the recipe back to its roots she became quickly stymied. "The Cold Pasta, well, it has always been here" she was told. "It's something we ate for as long as I can remember". "Grandmom made it her way and Auntie had her own little twist - she added garlic".

So, will we ever know the real beginnings of Mama Lisa's Cold Pasta? Probably not, but will that cause us to love it any less? Definitely not. Ask Elliott and Abigail!

ii. ELLIOTT EARL ANSTINE, b. February 25, 1997.

Elliott and Abigail Anstine were both born in Tampa but their family traditions came from much further north. The Anstine Family came to this country in 1751 when Hans Georg Anstine arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Germany. He was just 15 years old and wanted to be a farmer.

In pre-revolutionary Pennsylvania there were basically two groups of people: the "English" whose ancestors came from Great Britain and the "Pennsylvania Dutch" whose ancestors came from Germany. They used the English word "Dutch" to describe them because the German word for their heritage is "Deutsch" which sounded to them like "Dutch".

Hans moved into York County where most of the people were of German descent and spoke German as their everyday language. He became a farmer as did his sons, three of whom fought in the Revolution.

The Pennsylvania Dutch were great cooks. They used the fresh vegetables and meats that came from their farms and adapted their German recipes to prepare wonderful meals which always concluded with pie or some other dessert.

General George Washington discovered Pennsylvania Dutch cooking when many served with him at Valley Forge. He liked what they cooked so much that, when he returned to Mount Vernon he took ex-Pennsylvania Dutch soldiers with him as his cooks.

In 1892, Chester Anstine, Elliott's and Abigail's Great-great grandfather moved from Pennsylvania to Baltimore where he carried on the tradition of good food by becoming an ice cream manufacturer. But the thing he liked best was Sour Beef and Gravy like his mother made for him.

So, he taught his wife Ida to cook Sour Beef. Ida didn't find it too hard to learn the Anstine recipe because she too was of German descent and her mother also made what she called "Sauerbraten".

Chester and Ida had two sons one of whom, Earl, was Elliott (whose middle name is Earl) and Abigail's Great grandfather. Earl loved Sour Beef and asked his mother to teach his wife Isabelle how to make it. And, in 1961 their son (Elliott & Abigail's grandfather) Bob married Cecelia Knight and the recipe passed to yet another generation.

It is one of Elliott and Abigail's favorites and they would like to share it with you. All of the Anstines hope that you and your family will love it just as much as we do.
