Pulaski, IL Notes for JOHN SIMPSON MCCAIN: [Mary Ann Anstine.FTW] JOHN MCCAIN IS DEAD Was a Well Known Pioneer Citizen Formerly a Resident of Logan County Died Last Sunday at the Home of Son, Samuel, Near Assumption, Illinois. Mr. John McCain died at the home of his son Samuel near Assumption, Illinois, at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, December 13, 1903, aged 74 years, 10 months and 22 days. The remains were brought to Mt. Pulaski Monday and taken to the home of Wm. Laughery on North Washington Street, where they remained until Tuesday morning when they were taken to Pleasant Valley Church, about four miles north of the city, and funeral services held at 11 o’clock, conducted by Rev. T. W. Greer pastor of the M. E. church. Interment was made in the Bowers-Templeman Cemetery in Chester Township. The pallbearers were Messrs. Sam Dawson, Henry Downing, Pat Huffman, Willis Shoup, Nelson and Lorenzo Downing. On Friday, December 3d, Mr. McCain appeared to be enjoying very good health, but after eating a hearty meal, was suddenly taken ill, the sickness developing into pneumonia, from which he died. He was conscious to the last. The subject of this sketch was born in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, January 21, 1829. In 1845 he came to Illinois stopping first at Lincoln, but located in Mt. Pulaski. For a time Mr. McCain lived on a farm south of this city. In 1860 he was married to Miss Mary Ann Anstine, sister of the late Wm. Anstine, five children being born to them, namely: William, John, Samuel, and daughters Mrs. Wesley Downing and Mrs. Sam Broughton, all of whom survive him. The ladies reside north of here, and William and Samuel live near Assumption, and John in South Dakota. Mr. McCain moved across Salt Creek during war times and resided there continually until less then ten years ago. His wife died in the month of October, 1879. He has been making his home with his sons near Assumption for over six years. Mr. McCain attended the last meeting of the Logan County Old Settlers’ Association held in this city last August. His son-in-law, Sam Broughton, was at Assumption on a visit, and the two drove through in a buggy. After spending several weeks visiting among relatives and friends he returned to his home. Mr. McCain had five brothers in the Civil War, three of whom (Adam, Dan, and William) died while in service. George and Wesley McCain returned to this state after the close of the war. George is now living near Monticello. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Collins, of Maroa. This pioneer citizen was an honest upright man who always tried to do some good. His disposition was of a kind and charitable nature, unselfish, he lived for others. Although his labors brought him no wealth he always had plenty which enabled him to live comfortably. For several years past he has resided with his sons who have given him every attention in his declining days. That more men such as he lived, what a better world this would be. The sorrowing family and relatives have the sympathy of all. Listed in 1850 OH, Pickaway Co. Walnut Twp. census under Mother with spelling as McCane, age 20, born PA. Two different copies of funeral notice says he was born January of 1829 and funeral notice of age 74 years, 10 months, 22 days reflect this date, but cemetery stone says Feb. 1829. Also some conflict as to the middle name, while funeral notice says Simpson, a great-granddaughter Joyce Rosenberg says that her mother had recorded it as Henry. MCCAIN: [Heinrich Anstine.FTW] Listed 1860 Logan Co, Il census with spelling as McKane Came to Illinois between 1853 and 1860, is listed in the 1850 Ohio Pickaway Co. Walnut Twp census under the name McCane age 23. The 1860 Ill Logan Co. Chester Twp. census has the spelling as McKane age 32. Both census list his birthplace as PA. He was married in Circleville, Pickaway Co. Ohio on 20 Nov. 1853 by a Rev. A. J. Roof. Marriage is recorded in Circleville, Pickaway Co. Ohio court house records, Vol. 4, Page 298. Spellings here is as William McClain and Susanna Onstine. He enlisted in the Civil War in Company B. 106th Vol. Inf. in Lincoln, IL on Aug. 9, 1862 and was mustered in on Sep. 17, 1862. Muster role says he was 5' 8", dark hair, blue eyes, fair skin. He died in Overton (Gen?)Hospital in Memphis TN on Oct. 4, 1863 of chronic diarrhea (gastroenteritis). He is buried there in a Military Cemetry under a CW stone with the name McCane. Military record says that he was also in the hospital in Jackson, TN in Jan & Feb 1863 and was on detached service in May & June 1963. (See military records and "History of 106th" for other info). Mt. Pulaski history & genealogy states that the first three infants died two in the same day and were buried in a rural cemetery near "Bald Knob" Mt. Pulaski Twp. Area historians say the the area southwest of Mt. Pulaski near the present Allspach lands, now known as "Whittle Hill", was known by that name. The cemetery no longer exists with many stones being moved to the present Steenbergen Cemetery, but no record exists of these three infants. Note: From family historian Lois Anstine - Information from Elizabeth(Lizzie)McCain is that Wm & Susanna lived across the field north and east of the Bowers-Templeman cemetery on what was later known as the Paul Shoup farm. Susanna lived there while William served in the war. More About WILLIAM H.
