Notes from Bob Anstine to Lucille Anstine

I will try to address some of the questions that you raised -

As you know -- My grandather is your grandfather's brother - Chester Clarence Anstine. Their father was Emanuel as you said. In my research of Civil War soldiers I saw in the Pennsylvania records that "Emanuel Anstine" was drafted into service. Unfortunately, that is all I was able to find - no record that he actually served, no record of his discharge, etc. Possibly he could have bought himself out of service or possibly he failed the physical or something like that.

He had a cousin, Valentine Anstine, who I do know did fight in the war as a private. I am not sure which family line he came from but I have been to his grave in the cemetary at the top of Glen Rock.

We are also descended from a Revolutionary War soldier. His name was George Anstine and he is buried in a church yard near Shrewsbury. He was the son of Hans Georg ("The Original and Only Anstine") and he married the daughter of one of his Revolutionary War buddies - Felix Hildebrand, so, we are descended from TWO veterans both of whom are well documented by both the Daughters and Sons of the Revolution if you would like to join. All you need to do is show your connection to George or Felix and you're good to go.

Emanuel and his wife, Ida Markel are probably buried in Pennsylvania. We don't know too much about them. We do know they had SIX children (SEE LATER INFORMATION BELOW FOR UPDATE ON THIS): Chester "Pop" - William Harry - Lillie - Cora - Ida & Sam Anstine.

This is a quote from "Bob" Anstine. I got a lot of United States Census information and e-mailed it to him. There was an Emanual Anstine listed and we questioned with some facts that did not make sense. Bob said, "This one may or may not be our guy. I think our Emanuel died about 1912 - 1916. I think it was his funeral that Dad (Earl Chester Anstine, Sr.) and Otts (Arthur "Otts" Smith) had to wait for dinner until the adults finished. While they were standing under a tree watching the art of Pennsylvania eating, Otts said: "Look at that fat Dutchman stuffing the food in - I hope he chokes".

(Earl and Otts were cousins - and kids - and kids or not -- you didn't ask an Anstine to wait for food!)

Emanuel is listed in the 1860 census working as a farm laborer on the Jacob Koller (age 75and his wife Eve's (age 60) farm in Pennsylvania. He was 18 years old at the time.

It lists all those children as being siblings of Chester Clarence Anstine ("Pop") from the FIRST MARRIAGE of Emanuel Anstine and Elizabeth Markel!!!!! --

With the second wife of Emanuel Anstine (Lena Ruhl) on the next page with NO CHILDREN listed!!! (There are also no children in the 1900 Census that lists he and his wife Lean with no kids (the census taker must have transposed the two letters.) He had only been married to her for two years in this census. He was 59 and she was 60 . . . doubt there were any kids there. (Unless my Great-great-grandfather - your Great-grandfather got his hands on a time machine and managed to get some Viagra!)

This is also where your "Aunt Laura" comes in. She's also listed as a child of Emanuel & Elizabeth (Ida) !!!!

Can this possibly be correct? I thought "Pop" had half brothers and sisters from another marriage. But this information (backed up by the 1900 census) means that Ida (Elizabeth) & Emanuel had 14 CHILDREN!!! The way the birth years are -- those other children couldn't have been from another marriage -- unless he had two wives at the same time!!! (Do I need to put this in the pile with the missing Peters baby? -- Do we have another mystery?)

Lillie Viola Anstine was one of six children born to Emanuel Anstine from his second marriage. There was another large family from a previous marriage. There are several pictures of some of the outings we took from Baltimoe to Glen Rock, Pennsylvania to visit their home.

Lillie and Clint raised a baby that belonged to a deceased relative. We were never sure whether Charles was officially adopted.

Aunt Lillie was "Pop's" sister who lived in Seitzland (near Glen Rock) Pennsylvania. We would visit her often, piling everyone in Dad's car and driving up Reisterstown Road to Pennsylvania. Sometimes I remember our getting a bushel of steamed crabs for a COUPLE OF DOLLARS and taking them for a crab feast. Her house had no running water and the water they got out of the pump has so much iron in it, it was awful! I was only about three years old and I STILL remember drinking Kool-Aid that tasted like it had nails in it. Aunt Lilly & Uncle Clint's house sat on a hill so steep that you had to go to the second floor to get out the back door. (No Joke.) We went past it last year and it appears as if the ground has at sometime been leveled off. But, the pump still stands in the yard. Uncle Clint had a parrot, and when he would approach the house it would say, "...Here comes the old fool now!" One of the pictures in this album are of Aunt Mary with me in the outhouse. Thanks Uncle Earl!

One time Dorthy remembers at Christmas time when they came down to visit, Uncle Clint got up on the ladder that they were using for the tree and since he loved ice cream, he said he wasn't coming down until somebody went to the store to get him some. We think he actually sat there until he got his treat. (The confection store was right down the street.)

From Bob Anstine - I assume that when Pop's father died someone just threw everything away - as as was the case when Aunt Lillie and Uncle Clint died Charles (their son) sold the entire contents of the house - - everything mind you - - for twenty-five dollars!!! Can you believe that? The corner cupboard would bring over $1,000 today. All the pictures went including that one of Uncle Clint in the Potosi Band uniform playing his coronet. I look for that photo in every antique mall we go into. It is probably ion a Cracker Barrel in Cleveland, Tennessee this very day looking over morbidly obese people scarfing up carbs. As you can tell, I am still hot under the collar about that since Cecelia and I were just in the process of setting up our first house and we would have paid at least $50 for the stuff - and it would have stayed in the family. Wilbur even was amazed by that. Oh well,

Buried North Cemetery, Seward, NE Son of John Anstine of Seward, NE spent life in Seward Co and rancher in Sherman Co., NE. Frank Anstine was born in Fon du Lac , Wisconsin on October 10th, 1865. As a very small child, he moved with his family to McDonough county Illinois. After moving to Nebraska, Frank decided to go west. He went to Oregon in 1892 at the age of 27. He met Winnifred Clememtine Morrow in 1892 and their first child Vaungh was born at Monmouth, Oregon. He returned to Nebraska about 1900 and he and Winnifred had two more childern. Doris and John. Frank was a loving and devoted father and after a lingering illness died on Feb. 4th 1953. Winnifred died in 1954 and both are buried at the North Cemetery in Seward, Nebraska.
