I remember going to visit Baltimore cousins and another CLA. I was born in 1934 and I should have been in that group of pictures as I generally was taken to all the family functions. Have you found a Revolutionary War ancestor who was in the army/etc? I was organizing to join the DAR, but did not find a good link to the army via Anstine and have gone to my Miller family line.

My mother was a great cook and a first class candy maker, my daughter Anna has taken the candy to a higher level by Quality control and great chocolate. She would love to get some shops outside the York area to carry her candy so if anyone in your family is interested call her at 800-candy25. My mother was plump and so was her mother and so am I and Anna but they all did physical labor. I don't, Anna does. I think the high level of physical activity is the difference. I wish I had the interest but I would rather read a book or work on the computer than physical labor. I am very clever about avoiding it.

From Anne - Did your parents have any relation to Emanuel Anstine who was my Grandfather's father's father? May I be so bold to ask what year you were born? I was about four years old when your Mother and Father came to visit -- born in 1944.

Did they come along with Clint and Lilly Anstine? Lilly was my Great-grandfather's sister - children of Emanuel. Don't you wish you had a time machine and could go back and ask them all the unanswered questions? There are some things that have been driving me to distraction in doing my family tree.

Earl Chester Anstine, Jr. is a version of his father with the good qualities of his mother mixed in. He has the same mechanical ability as Dad (although he denies it by saying Dad was better). He has the same quiet manner his father possessed; and the same knowledge of fairness and basic goodness.

The Anstine males have always been wonderful family men. Uncle Earl is no exception. All the Anstines feel as if this is one large family, and we all take care of one another. I remember when I was about 3-1/2 years old and Aunt Mary was watching me at thier house and Uncle Earl was at work. O.E. always took the bus to his B. & O. Railroad job downtown and left the car in the driveway. Well, the "Boyer" blood must have taken over in me and somehow I found myself in Uncle Earl's car playing with the gear shift. The next thing I know, the car and I had backed out -- blocking the street; and Aunt Mary is standing on the porch in disbelief. Mary never drove. (That's another story for later.) Well, Uncle Earl had to come all the way home from downtown Baltimore to Pikesville, because he had the car keys in his pocket! I never remember anyone getting mad! One of the stories of Uncle Earl's that I've always enjoyed was about his attempts to teach Aunt Mary to drive. He decided that the best way to accomplish this would be to get a driving school to teach her professionally. She could never get the concept of a standard shift. Well, Mary had a couple lessons and the man called Uncle Earl on the phone one night and said, "Mr. Anstine, I have a suggestion. I'm not so sure your wife should EVER DRIVE A CAR." When Uncle Earl was small he remembers wanting to buy his mother a Christmas gift. He doesn't know how he got $l.00, but he got one somehow and between their house and the church there was a little store run by a lady named Mrs. Kopp. She had everything in there from soup to nuts. He said he wanted to buy his mother a Christmas present. She said, 'How much money do you have?" He said he had one dollar and she said, "You can buy your mother a pair of "stockings". They wweren't nylons in those days. She said, "do you want the sheer or the heavy duty?" He said, wanting the best, "They're for MY MOTHER! I WANT THE HEAVY DUTY!" His mother was so pleased and thankful for the present, and O.E. never saw the stockings again.

Another time, he went to Mrs. Kopp and wanted to buy another christmas present for his mother and father. In those days his mother and father didn't drink anything. O.E. bought them a cocktail Set. It had whiskey glasses and a mixer which was glass with a chrome top. Dorthy gave it to Hunter Anstine who collects antique drinking items. (Hunter, now you know where they came from.)

I always begged Aunt Mary to please write down the names in order of who belonged to whom. She knew the family history probably better than any of us -- and she had married into it. She was always very close friends with my Grandmother and knew some of the "inside stuff". Without Uncle Earl's and my mother, Dorthy's help and stories, little or none of this information would ever have been compiled into this book.

My Aunt Mary. We sure do miss her. My memories go back to about the age of 2 when she came to our house to live after marrying Uncle Earl in England and leaving her homeland and family. That must have been so difficult! O.E. (Uncle Earl) told me the story of how he met Mary. He had a friend in the camp who lived in the same hut, who was of "questionable character" named Jerry Fish, from Scranton, PA. When Jerry went to town he usually bummed money. Jerry was walking home one night in the rain and ducked into one of the outside English telephone booths. In the booth, also getting out of the rain, was a girl named Linda Stevens. Before the rain was over, she invited him to meet her the next day. Jerry asked if she had any girlfriends to bring with her. He went back to the camp and mentioned it to some of the others and Uncle Earl went with them. Two of the girls were Mary Harrison (Aunt Mary) and her friend Maisie. Uncle Earl paired off with Maisie. He kept looking at Mary, thinking how good looking she was. Before the night was over, he told Jerry to tell Linda he wanted a date with Mary. But, Linda didn't cooperate, so a couple of weeks went by and a group of them went to movies and Mary was going to be there. Uncle Earl and Aunt Mary dated for about a year and Uncle Earl proposed. Aunt Mary didn't want to marry him because she was afraid he would get hurt in the war. Earl went to visit Mary and one of the soldiers came by and said they were pulling out because the invasion was starting. He told Mary he wouldn't be able to see her any more and Mary said that if he came back, she would marry him. O.E. was in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. When that was over, the General said he would give some of the guys a leave of absence and Earl went to headquarters and applied and got a furlow. It was cold weather in February and they got in the back of a convoy of open trucks. They stopped in France and had cold cans of food. They got to the replacement depot on the English Channel on the coast of France for the night. The next day they got new uniforms and got on a small steamer ship and went to South Hampton. From there they got on a train and went to London. Uncle Earl decided they were going to get married and sent Mary a telegram. He was about 20 - 30 miles from Cheltingham, and the train broke down. They all got out and decided they would walk into town and get something to eat. They got fish and chips and O.E. said he decided they could hitchhike and get there faster. They got a ride almost right away on an Army bus to Cheltenham. He got to Dot's house where Mary was staying and walked in and found Mary casually ironing clothes. Aunt Mary said, "What did you do, go AWOL?" He said, "Didn't you get my telegram?" Mary said, "NO". Dot came home and they told her they were getting married. Dot said, "You need a dress, a preacher and a license?" Mary got outfitted with Dot's help by Dot running around on a bicycle in England with Dot almost 9 months pregnant. They went to see the Vicer in the church. He told Earl that they Bishop wanted to see him. Mary and he went to see him and he talked to them and he said, "Well, I don't usually approve of these English girls marrying these American soldiers, but in this case, I'm going to give it my blessing." Uncle Earl thought to himself, whether this guy gives any blessings or not isn't important -- I'm going to marry this girl! They had to wait until Monday to get married. They went to the church and Mary's Uncle Mike had arranged for a taxi for after the ceremony and also for a luncheon at the Gaumont Movie. They all met there after the ceremony and the waitress asked how many cups of tea they needed and counted 13 people. Tthe waitress wouldn't serve them 13 cups of tea -- so she went and got another American soldier in the place to make it a lucky number.

WEDDING PICTURE:

The girl in the back row -- standing behind Dot "Auntie Fran" -- is the telephone booth girl, Linda Stevens.

British policemen went up and down the streets asking families if they could take in American soldiers. (The lady to the left of O.E. in the wedding picture, Mrs. Withers, was the lady that took O.E. in. She told him she wanted to be his "mother" for the wedding.)

I remember when Mike was born. My mother, Dorthy, and I were in Ocean City and Mary went into labor early with Mike. We got a telephone in Ocean City that we had to come home -- not only because Mike was being born -- but because we had the suitcase!

Mike has always had the Anstine flair of fixing things. He has helped Uncle Earl dig me out of more mechanical troubles!

The age difference between Mike and me is eight years -- the same as me and Bob. We've always been buddies.

There's isn't much one can put on a page about their mother when they love them so much that there's no language that truly would express the deepest feelings. I always thought my mother was the most beautiful thing in the world. When I was little, it always seemed to me that my mother was perfect. Over the years, I found out that she truly was.

She plays the piano wonderfully with few lessons. With just her coaching and encouragement -- and no talent on my part -- she taught me to read musical notes as a small child and gave me some natural ability and a lot of appreciation for ALL KINDS OF MUSIC. She always made sure to buy me all kinds of music -- from the classics to the hits of the day like "Davey Crockett".

My mother is always ahead of her time. She had to go to work to support me and herself -- but always made sure I was safe, secure and loved. She doesn't know it, but she is a pioneer for today's modern woman.

She always called me her "Miss Adorable Jones".

She kept Ame's name and birthdate on a piece of paper next to her bed so someone would find it at some time. I'm glad she did. She loved Scott until the day he died and beyond -- as hard as it was a times.

She is honest and loving and kind to a fault. Without these attributes, she would have stopped loving me a long time ago.

She is the epitome of integrity. She always makes me laugh. I am always so proud.

My father was a very handsome man. He and my mother met in High School and married in January of 1943. He and my mother divorced when I was 2 years old.

My mother and I were shopping in Westview Shopping Center in Catonsville when I was about 19 years old. She said to me, "That's your Grandmother and Grandfather Boyer over there in the next department. Would you like to meet them?" We had no contact since the divorce when I was a baby. They were very friendly, and asked if we would like to come to dinner that week. (I was already married and had Scott.) My mother, Jimmy Lucas, baby Scott and I went to dinner at their house and the meeting went quite well. My father's sister, Mary Elaine and her husband were there also. It was later arranged that Scott, Jimmy & I would drive to meet Howard for a dinner meeting. (He was living in New Jersey at the time.) It was quite strange, meeting your father after knowing nothing about him except the pictures kept around the house and conversations overheard all those years. You remember strange things about meetings like that one. I don't remember too many details -- I guess I was nervous. But, of all things to remember -- I remember ordering Salisbury Steak! We developed a good relationship and have kept in touch since that first meeting.

Clarence Leroy Anstine was named after his father's brother of the same exact name. The first Clarence Leroy Anstine was a pharmacist and his namesake followed in his footsteps, graduating from City High School in Baltimore in 1954 and then went on to graduate from University of Maryland's Pharmaceutical School. He then was accepted into the Naval Officer's Candidate School in Rhode Island.

He was nicknamed "Bob" by Anne Boyer at an early age. Anne either couldn't say "Clarence" or didn't want to. He has been "Bob" to the rest of the world since then.

Due to my parents' divorce, we found ourselves being raised in the same household. Bob is 8 years my senior. We were more like brother and sister than uncle and niece. We constantly "deviled" each other with harmless pranks and annoying mischief.

Bob always worked so hard in school -- studying long hours. I always say, " I never really remember him being in the same house." Most of my memories are of a voice yelling downstairs from his bedroom saying, "Can't you get her to stop making ALL THAT NOISE!" (I was trying to teach myself to play the piano from books my mother had given me.)

All that studying has rewarded him with a successful life. One of which his mother and father would be so proud. He has traveled extensively and lived in interesting places all over the world.

We, as probably most brothers and sisters do after they mature, have become close friends in the past few years. Bob (and Cecelia) are fun to be around. It is their fault that we started to collect all this yellow/green glass that is everywhere in my house.

"Bob" is now a Doctor of Pharmacy and is involved in continuing education. He lives (temporarily) in Plano, Texas with his wife.

Bob’s Internationally Famous Chili Recipe

Executive Summary – This chili is respectably hot but it is not scorching. In other words, it is designed to be politically correct and not to offend any palate. If you, who we will refer to as the designated eater, feel that this is definitely baby food, at your discretion and in your own time can add additional red pepper flakes or sliced jalapeño peppers to your heart’s desire. For everyone else, I like it this way and you are heartily invited to join in and enjoy.

Bob Anstine

Pharmaceutical Cook

Ingredients –

3 ½ pounds of top round, remove the fat and cut the rest into ½ inch cubes

5 tablespoons oil

2 cups coarsely chopped onion

2 to 4 cloves of garlic* (If you know me you will recognize that, when it comes to garlic, I am not Emeril Lagasse. The way I figure it is that the French began to flavor their meat with garlic because, for the most part, by the time they got around to using it the meat was pretty much spoiled and tasted terrible. The way I feel about it is that – HELLO – today we have refrigeration and unless you want everything to taste like garlic, you don’t need to use it any more. So, what I do is, so that I am not labeled not politically correct, later on down in the recipe I mention that one can use garlic salt in place of regular salt. There, feel better?)

4 tablespoons chili powder

1 ½ teaspoons oregano

1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin

1 teaspoon crushed red peppers

2 cups beef stock

1 can (1 lb. 13 oz.) whole tomatoes

1 six ounce can tomato paste

1 tablespoon salt*

1 teaspoon sugar

1 to 2 tablespoons yellow cornmeal, as needed

Heat three tablespoons of the oil in a large, heavy pot. When hot, add the meat all at once. Sear it, turning constantly, until all sides are lightly browned. This takes about three to four minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the meat into a bowl. Add the remaining two tablespoons of oil to the pot and add the onion (garlic if you will) and sauté until the onion is wilted but not browned.

Stir in the chili powder, oregano, cumin and crushed red peppers – mix well until onions are coated. Add the stock, tomatoes (juice and all), tomato paste, salt and sugar mixing well.

Break up the tomatoes with the back of a spoon. And put the meat back into the pot, cover and simmer for one hour. Uncover and simmer for 40 to 50 minutes or until the meat is very tender. Cool, cover and refrigerate over night.

To serve, bring slowly to a boil and simmer until heated through, covered if thick, uncovered if runny. If it is too runny when it is hot, thicken by sprinkling the corn meal over the top and stir in well. At this point if you would like, add a can of kidney beans.

Serve over rice or spaghetti noodles with salad, corn bread and your favorite beverage. Serves about 10 normal people or one Texan.

She met "Bob" Anstine in the Ocean View Baptist Church, where they were married in l961. She and Bob have lived in many interesting places, including the Village of Chobham, England, Winchester; Virginia; Atlanta, Georgia; Tampa, Florida and presently reside in Plano, Texas -- for now.

Cecelia Knight Anstine married into this family in 1961. She never knew Bob's mother Isabelle, but became close to Bob's father, Earl, Sr. We all fell in love with Cecelia as soon as we met her when Bob brought her to Baltimore to meet us. She is a thoughtful, generous person who is now one of us. We all love visiting her home, as she is so gracious and makes you feel as if you want to stay forever.
